CAUCASIAN (Mellifera Caucasica)
Our Caucasian Queen Bees (Apis Mellifera Caucasica) represent a premium genetic line developed and stabilized by the world-renowned Master Breeder Krzysztof Loc. Originating from the high-altitude valleys of the Central Caucasus, this "Loc Selection" is specifically engineered to excel in environments where nectar sources are difficult to reach and climates are unpredictable.
THE "LOC SELECTION" ADVANTAGES FOR CANADA:
1. THE LONGEST TONGUE IN THE BEE WORLD The Caucasian bee is famous for having the longest proboscis (tongue) of any honeybee species.
- The Benefit: These bees can access nectar from deep-flower sources like Red Clover and Alfalfa that are physically inaccessible to other races.
- The Result: This ensures consistent honey production even when traditional forage is scarce, a massive advantage for Canadian commercial beekeepers.
2. SUPERIOR FORAGING IN COOL CONDITIONS Under the selection of Master Breeder Loc, these queens produce workers that are notoriously "early risers."
- Temperature Resilience: They begin foraging in cooler, overcast conditions where other breeds remain in the hive. This is critical for the often damp and cool Canadian spring.
- Low Robbing: Unlike some other races, the Loc Caucasian line has a very low tendency to rob, maintaining better hive security and health.
3. STRATEGIC COLONY GROWTH & STRENGTH While they overwinter exceptionally well, their buildup is strategically timed.
- Mid-Summer Peak: Colonies reach their maximum strength in mid-summer, perfectly synchronized with the major honey flows of the Canadian Prairies.
- Reduced Swarming: One of the hallmarks of Loc’s selection is a significantly lower propensity to swarm compared to Carniolan bees, allowing for easier management of large-scale apiaries.
4. THE BUCKFAST HYBRID ADVANTAGE To optimize these queens for modern commercial use, our Caucasian bees are fertilized by selected Buckfast drones.
- Spring Boost: This specific cross helps anticipate spring development and reduces the excessive use of propolis, making hive inspections faster and more efficient for the beekeeper.
